We have arrived in El Salvador. We had a little hold up getting through customs with all of the medical supplies. Apparently the agent needed to collect an import fee/tax. So, after negotiating the import tax to $1700.00 we loaded up the busses. It was a good hour ride to Ayagualo. It is a cute place and everything is so green. We ate and then organized the supplies for tomorrow's brigade.
Thank you for your detailed account of the brigade, Lisa. Speaking on behalf of MedWish, we would like to clarify that while we may not agree that the amount of import duties we were asked to pay was reasonable - it was not by any definition a bribe. It was a legal requirement to bring in the 1,500 pounds of supplies we needed to do our work.
